After completing the course care staff should be able to:

• Identify why good oral care is important for older people in care.
• Recognise what elements add to poor oral health in older people.
• Show good methods of day to day care when supporting residents who need assistance.
• Recognise and know how and when to be concerned about an individual’s oral health.
• Explain the importance of oral care documentation, e.g care plans and risk assessments.
• Perform an oral health risk assessment.
• Explain what strategies can be used to help residents with dementia and those who display challenging behaviour towards oral care.
• Recognise when more specialised care is needed
